In the spring of 2009 the tenor John Duykers asked for some songs on the subject of planting, and a number of poems from Lou Harrison’s book Joys and Perplexities came quickly to mind. John asked for simple accompaniments he could provide for himself, either with piano or accordion; since I’d never written for the latter I was pleased at the chance. The songs are quite spare and rather reflective.
